Horseback Riding in Banff: Bow River, Spray River or Sundance?

Updated October 28, 2026 · 6 min read

Riders on horseback on a dusty forest trail beside a turquoise river with a rocky peak behind

For a first ride in Banff, one hour beside the Bow River is the easiest commitment. Spray River offers a different valley setting, while the two-hour Sundance Loop makes more sense if time in the saddle is the point of the day. None is automatically “better”: comfort, route conditions and the operator’s participation rules decide.

The three main choices

The one-hour Bow River horseback ride starts at €70.14 and has 771 reviews. Its short duration is useful for beginners and mixed itineraries.

The one-hour Spray River ride starts at €77.25 and has 495 reviews. Choose between the one-hour routes for scenery, meeting point and availability rather than a small price difference.

The two-hour Sundance Loop ride has 220 reviews. Two hours gives the ride more substance, but it also doubles the time that an inexperienced rider spends in the saddle.

What beginners should check

Guided trail rides normally use a walking pace, but “beginner-friendly” does not remove every restriction. Confirm minimum age, maximum weight, footwear, pregnancy policy and required riding experience on the booking page. Do not transfer a rule from one route to another; operators can set different limits.

Wear long trousers and closed shoes. Mountain weather can change quickly, so bring a layer that does not flap loosely. The operator decides whether rain, trail condition or wildlife activity changes the route.

Horses and the national park

Horse travel is part of Banff’s trail history, but access is managed. Parks Canada restricts horse use in some sensitive areas and seasons. Stay with the guide and do not assume that every hiking trail is open to horses.

Allow time beyond the advertised ride

Arrive early for check-in, horse assignment and the safety briefing. A one-hour product is not necessarily one hour from arrival to departure. Ask whether small bags and cameras may be carried and where valuables are stored, because loose items are awkward on the trail. Route changes are also possible when weather, trail condition, wildlife activity or seasonal restrictions take precedence over the advertised view. Compare these rides by duration and general valley, not by a promise of one exact photograph.

Our verdict

Pick Bow River for a low-commitment first ride, Spray River for its valley route, and Sundance when two hours in the saddle genuinely appeals. If anyone is unsure about balance, mobility or participation limits, ask the operator before paying. A shorter suitable ride is better value than a longer route endured rather than enjoyed.
