Icefields Parkway and Columbia Icefield from Banff: Tour or Drive?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 6 min read
The Columbia Icefield is possible as a day trip from Banff, but it is not a casual loop. The Icefields Parkway starts at Lake Louise and runs 232 km to Jasper through a remote corridor with limited services and long stretches without mobile coverage. A guided tour removes the driving; a car gives you control over stops.
What a guided day includes
The Columbia Icefield, Skywalk, Peyto Lake, glacier and lakes tour starts at €48.94, lasts 12 hours and has 981 reviews. Its appeal is breadth: transport, major viewpoints and the icefield area in one day. The cost is pace. A twelve-hour itinerary leaves little freedom when one viewpoint deserves longer.
Read the inclusions carefully. “Columbia Icefield” in a title does not automatically mean that every glacier vehicle experience or the glass Skywalk is included. Seasonal operation and weather can change what runs.
When driving is better
Drive if photography, short walks and choosing your own turnaround point matter more than commentary. Parks Canada warns that fuel, food and mobile service are limited. Download maps, check 511 Alberta and carry what you need before leaving the populated corridor.
The road is open year-round, but winter travel is a different proposition. Snow tyres or chains are mandatory from 1 November to 31 March, and whenever the road is covered with snow or ice. Avalanche control and severe weather can close sections. If that does not fit your mountain-driving experience, take a guided trip or save the route for another date.
If you choose to drive, compare Banff car hire only after checking winter equipment, collection location, excess, fuel policy and road restrictions with the operator.
Skywalk, glacier and expectations
The developed glacier experience is not the same as freely walking on a glacier. Stay within the booked activity and marked areas. Bring layers even in summer: Parks Canada notes that snow can fall in any month and conditions vary sharply along the parkway.
The road is part of the commitment
From Lake Louise to Jasper the parkway is 232 km, with only one fuel station in the serviced season and no mobile coverage along the road. A self-drive day needs a full tank, downloaded directions, food, water and enough daylight for unplanned stops. Compare the €48.94 tour price with paid icefield attractions carefully: look for the named Ice Explorer and Skywalk in the inclusion list, not merely in photographs. Meals, park admission and hotel pickup also require separate checks.
Our verdict
Choose the tour for a first visit, one available day or uncertain winter conditions. Drive when the road itself is your destination and you can prepare for a remote mountain route. Do not try to combine every famous stop with Jasper and a relaxed return to Banff in one day.
