Moraine Lake and Lake Louise: Shuttle, Tour or Drive Since the Car Ban?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 4 min read
You cannot take a personal vehicle to Moraine Lake: the road is closed to private cars year-round. Lake Louise remains reachable by car, but its limited paid parking often fills early. For most visitors staying in Banff, a reserved shuttle, public bus or licensed tour is more dependable than trying the car park.
Which option fits
The Parks Canada shuttle joins the Park and Ride with Lake Louise and, during the operating season, Moraine Lake. A reservation includes the connector between both lakes. Public transit is useful from Banff. A commercial tour costs more, but removes the separate reservation and usually adds commentary and other stops.
The Emerald Lake, Moraine Lake, Lake Louise and Johnston Canyon tour costs from €51.24, lasts 11 hours and has 2,447 reviews. It is a long day; choose it for breadth, not quiet time beside one lake. The half-day Lake Louise and Johnston Canyon or Moraine Lake tour starts at €41.56 and lasts 5.5 hours, but the seasonal destination in the title means you must check which lake is included on your date.
Can you still drive?
You may drive to Lake Louise, although Parks Canada advises against relying on the lakeshore car park in the busy season. You may not continue to Moraine Lake. A car therefore does not solve the hardest access problem.
Reservations and extra costs
The Moraine Lake shuttle is seasonal, and opening dates depend on conditions. Reservation release times can change between years, so use the current Parks Canada page rather than an old schedule. Lake Louise lakeshore parking carries a separate seasonal charge and park admission is additional. Travellers with luggage, mobility equipment or child seats should confirm what their chosen shuttle or tour can carry. Leave enough time to reach the Park and Ride before the allocated departure.
Do not judge the options by transport price alone. A full-day tour buys commentary and several additional stops, while a shuttle reservation buys access and leaves the pace largely to you. Lake Louise and Moraine Lake also need walking time from the drop-off points. A plan that reaches both lakes but allows only a rushed photograph at each may offer less value than one well-paced visit.
Our recommendation
Reserve the public shuttle if both lakes are your priority and you are comfortable organising the day. Choose the guided full-day tour if you also want Emerald Lake and Johnston Canyon. Check the exact stops, cancellation terms and current operating dates on the booking page before paying.
